Though it’s only a short drive from Marrakech, the Agafay Desert feels like a world away. This is the location of Caravan by Habitas Agafay, a collection of 20 opulent tented lodges inspired by Berber homes but furnished with as much luxury as an eco-conscious hotel group can muster in a desert setting. The lodges are surrounded by rocky dunes and have distant views of the Atlas Mountains.
The most basic option are the Explorer Tents, which feature a stone patio with a view of the mountains and solar-powered lighting but no television. The three types of lodges are slightly bigger and have more substantial construction; some have their own decks or stone patios. Nothing about them is showy, but they also don’t come across as harsh.
The on-site activities include two swimming pools, a small spa, a yoga pavilion, and live music; naturally, the main attraction is venturing into the desert, whether on horseback, bicycle, or camel. And a visit to Olivar, the camp’s outdoor restaurant, would not be complete without a delicious introduction to Moroccan food.

The public areas are welcoming and the setting is lovely. The entire camp appears roomy and thoughtfully designed.
The tents, which serve as rooms, lack natural light and are incredibly dark. Even though the property has only been open for about a year, they looked a little worn out, contrary to our expectations that they would be more akin to opulent safari-style accommodations. Additionally, the temperature and water pressure were average for a remote camp—that is, not exceptional.
Ride the camel, please! It’s enjoyable. Sample the traditional Moroccan morning meal. It tastes great.
